The Deathly Hallows

tools to master death

The Deathly Hallows are three magical items that appear in JK Rowlings' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It is said that when a person unites the Hallows then he/she will be a "master of death".

According to the Tales of Three Brothers the Peverell brothers meet death on a bridge while crossing a river. Angered that he lost some potential victums death pretends to be impressed with them so he grants them three wishes. The eldest brother wishes for an unbeatable dueling wand and the middle wishes for the ability to ressurect the dead. The youngest brother realizes death's intention and asks death for a way to stop death from following him, so death gives him a cloak of invisibility. Afterwords the brothers go their seperate ways.

The eldest brother is killed and robbed after he is overheard bragging about his wand in his sleep. The middle brother kills himself to join his lost love after he ressurects her with the stone and she tells him she isn't happy being alive again. Death, however, never manages to find the youngest brother who has stayed under his invisiblity cloak. Pleased with himself the youngest brother gives his cloak to his son and greets death as an old friend and decides to leave togther "as equals"

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter learns about the Deathly Hallows from the Tales of Beedle the Bard a childrens book of wizard fairtales that Hermione inherited from Dumbledore and from Luna Love Good's Father. The Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak are the three Deathly Hallows.

Harry inherits the Ressurection stone from Dumbeldore who hids it in the first snitch that Harry caught. The invisiblity cloak is actually Harry Potter's own invisibilty cloak. So Harry himself carries the two Deathly Hallows. The elder wand, went through many wizards before Dumbeldore claimed it. Throughout Deathly Hallows the Elder Wand is in the possesion of Voldermort, however Voldermort stole the wand from Dumbledore's tomb and therefore he is not the wands master. Only one who master's the elder wand, mainly the one who defeats the weilder of the elder wand, becomes the master of it. When used against it's master the spells weilded backfire, for the wand can't harm it's master. This is is how harry potter comes into posssesion of the elder wand.

Dumbeldore originally planed for Snape to become the next master, however his planned back fired when Draco disarmed him becoming the master of the elder wand. Voldermort doesn't know this so when he kills snape he believes that the has become the master and therefore weilds the wand after he steals it from Dumbeldore's grave. Harry, however, became the true master when he disarmed Draco. So in the final battle between Harry and Voldermort the killing curse from Voldermort's wand backfires and kills him because the wand can't harm it's master.

In the end Harry plans to return the wand to dumbeldore's tomb, fulfilling Dumbeldore's orignal plan of ending the trail of violence in the name of the wand by having it's reigning master die a natural death.
